This year the Programme of Indoor Meetings is similar to that for last year, including an evening meeting in London, the annual joint meeting and Brad Ashby Memorial Lecture with the London Natural History Society on Tuesday 15 September 2009. The Annual Exhibition remains at Imperial College on 7 November 2009, while Workshops and Open Days will continue as usual at Dinton Pastures at weekends. The Annual General Meeting is on Saturday 13 March 2010, once again hosted by the Oxford University Museum, whose help in making their excellent facilities available is greatly appreciated. A Sunday meeting at Bristol and a Saturday meeting at Cambridge have been arranged in conjunction with their respective host institutes and local societies, and we are very grateful for their support and hospitality for both these events. In each case, the programme for the day will include talks of interest to members from further afield as well as those residing nearby.
Council hopes that these arrangements will again prove popular and will be supported by new and long-standing members alike. These meetings are an excellent way to meet other entomologists and to hear about what is happening in the world of natural history. Members are encouraged to bring exhibits and to report any entomological news or interesting observations at the start of each meeting. The following list also includes the major annual events for those groups affiliated to BENHS, with additional information available via their web sites for those wishing to attend.
(Meetings marked in blue have already taken place but are included
here for information.)
Keith Alexander will give the Brad Ashby Memorial Lecture entitled Ancient and Veteran Trees: their very special wildlife and the conservation implications. The talk is the major part of the annual joint meeting with the London Natural History Society, this year hosted by the LNHS in Room SALC 5, Sherfield Building, Imperial College, London SW7 2AZ (about ten minutes walk from South Kensington underground station) (at 18.00 for 18.30). The entrance is the same as that used for the BENHS Annual Exhibition.
BWARS Autumn Meeting and AGM will be held over the week-end at World Museum Liverpool, William Brown Street, Liverpool L3 8EN (www.bwars.com). There will be a varied programme with workshops and evening meal on Saturday and the AGM plus talks on Sunday. Advance booking is essential, via Mike Edwards (telephone: 01273 810482; E-mail: ammophila).
Note: this is to be held on the first rather than the second Saturday in November this year. Please bring exhibits to show your entomological discoveries for 2009 and previous years. You can discuss the highlights of the season with others who have similar interests, either in the exhibition hall or over dinner in the evening. For new members this is an excellent opportunity to make contact with other entomologists. A separate notice will be circulated to give details of the arrangements for this major event in the calendar of the Society.
